KUDOS!

THE INCREDIBLE INDIANAPOLIS WELLNESS TEAM feedback from the Fit4Learning Seminar

Audrey Satterblom - wellnessCoordinator - "If you are implementing a wellness policy this next year, this is a must workshop for physical activity and curriculum. I look forward to our test scores rising after we implement these concepts in the Indianapolis Public Schools next year."

Melissa Richards - administrator - "I really enjoyed the day. As an administrator it is important that I understand ALL facets of learning. The brain research is not only interesting but relevant. Our students are going to be up and moving starting tomorrow in the classroom, outside and in the gym !!!"

Tracy Cutshaw - classroomTeacher - "Thanks so much for such a wonderful seminar. I learned many new strategies to engage my students from your high energy presentation. The excitement you showed throughout the day was endless. I have already implemented some of the more simple strategies with my first graders. They LOVE all the movement and music! I thought I was already incorporating quite a bit of movement in my lessons and transitions. I had no idea how much more I could and should be doing with my students. I am planning on using one or more of the more organized strategies along with much of the research components you shared with us to video tape and present to the Indianapolis Public School Director of Elementary Education. I'm thrilled about the possibilities that this could mean for our district and my own classroom. My three most challenging students have had their best several days ever concerning behavior and procductivity in the academic areas. I know that's no accident. Those three students have also smiled more than I have seen in quite a several weeks. I want to give you a HUGE kudos and thank you."

Kim Ward - physicalEducator - "I would say that from my readings that I got from this workshop I have found that research reveals that aerobic exercise is necessary for our brains to be at top condition. Also, I would encourage classroom teachers to take the exercise thing seriously. Finally I really liked the phrase: "Physical fitness translates into cognitive fitness". I think this is a great way to get your staff members to work cooperatively as a team. Afterall, Together Everyone Achieves More."

"This seminar was proof that active kids make better learners. During the seminar we were moving and doing and I can remember the actions and the words so much better. I believe kids have a natural instinct to want to "move" and with Action-Packed Classrooms, they can move! I have already tried several of the activities and the response is nothing but positive. When the kids come into the gym and ask can we do Tony Chestnut for a warm-up activity, I respond with Yes, we can! Doing is learning!"
- Perri Shutts, Elem. P.E. specialist

Packed Classrooms was an awesome experience. Integration of physical activity into every aspect of education is a step in the right direction in the fight against obesity. This integrative approach is just what teachers, in all content areas, need to provide children with the means to enhance their academic success. The workshop participants were all there for various reasons, from administrators, classroom teachers, to PE teachers.

We all participated in activities that can be taken back immediately to our classrooms to share with the children that are the priority. If we can get our bodies moving, then we get our brain engaged. If we get our brain engaged, then we are more ready to learn. If we are more ready to learn we will!

Cathie Summerford has the passion and the drive to make this workshop relevant, valued, and most importantly FUN; kids move and have fun at the expense of gaining necessary knowledge in a variety of content areas. I would recommend this workshop anyone who works with children!"
- Kristin Underwood, Wyoming Elementary PE Coordinator

Cathie,
This is just a quick note to say my students love your ideas and can hardly believe the school day is over when we have action packed lessons. Time flies for these first graders when they are actively engaged. Also, your book is worth every penny because it gets right to the point of what to do for action packed lessons. It's easy to find info without sorting through pages and pages. The other special aspect of your book is it triggers ideas from oneself own creative action packed ways to teach learners. (Longtitude & latitude are 2 exciting concepts to teach through action as well as number lines.) I also appreciate the research info from the book. You are more than welcome to share my comments if you want because I firmly believe and have seen how your ideas work in my classroom and with the staff at Rio Vista Elem. in the El Monte City Sch. District. I shared some of your ideas at a mini inservice for our school staff and they were all so eager and receptive to applying your ideas.

Thank you again for one of the very best inservices I haver attended in 35 years and the fastest moving one where time flew by and the entire day was over in a blink of the eye with no wasted time.
- Mariane Luis, First Grade Teacher

Dear Cathie,

Thanks for presenting at the CAHPERD Conference in California . All of the dances were great fun! The weather song was too cute, the math song was fun, and I will have fun using the monkey exercise song. Thanks again for sharing all your great ideas and energy! - Brien Thomas, Teacher

Hi Cathie,

I wanted to thank you so much for coming to share with us this weekend. Your seminar was wonderful! The music and information about the brain/learning/movement connection is soooo interesting. I look forward to sharing the joy of movement, that you gave me, with my students. - Marla Dahlby, Teacher

Dear Cathie,

You are an amazing presenter, and I've been telling my teacher friends about your ideas as well as your books. Thanks for the help. - Thea Grubb, Teacher

Hi Cathie,

I am an adapted physical education consultant in Iowa . Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed you session and energizers at the conference in San Diego ! Outstanding! Love the emphasis on movement. Many thanks, - Ann Griffin, Consultant, Adapted Physical Education

Cathie,

Hello! I wanted to say that I really enjoyed your workshop. It was the best workshop I attended this summer. I learned so many useful things that I am able to use in my room. I went out and bought a boombox with a remote control and use music as a transition. The kids love it! My students also LOVE Tony Chestnut. Whenever we have a few minutes of extra time they ask for Tony.

I have to tell you that I tried the barnyard outdoor P.E. game. I almost wet my pants! The first game we did pigs, cows, sheep, and ducks. One student stopped in the middle of the field and told the pigs to be quiet so she could find her sheep. I had one of my gate students (who was a duck) not quacking, but going around yelling "Aflack". Between intakes of air from laughing so hard, I told him that if he wanted the other ducks to find him he should quack between every other Aflack.

Thanks again for such a fun and informative session! Good luck on your travels.
